History of the Cabin
In 1965, Mr. M.E. Olson donated a wilderness area, including half of the shoreline of Young Lake, to the Church for use as a retreat area. Several laymen—including members of the advisory committee for Boy Scout Troop 15—presented a plan and received permission from the Session to develop the property for the congregation. Working together, mostly on weekends, Church members and friends built over 2 miles of road and a 70 foot steel –span bridge over the Paleface river to gain access to the lake. A two-story A-Frame cabin was then constructed to house the many activities possible at the forest. A well and a generator for the lights were added. Materials and equipment came from donations and individual bequests. A hiking trail system, playground, and boat dock were provided through Eagle Scout projects. Two campfire areas with benches, a large screen house, picnic tables and a meeting and worship area overlooking the lake were constructed. On-going maintenance, construction, and fund-raising are done through a permanent committee of the Session. Part of the outreach mission of the Church is encouraging the use of Giving Forest by others. Scout troupes, youth groups, retreat groups, hikers, and nature lovers, artists, and individual family groups from several different cultural organizations and congregations have enjoyed the opportunities which the Forest provides. |
